Gel Polish, Acrylic or Gel Extensions? A Simple Guide to Choosing Your Manicure
Nail art has become one of the fastest-growing beauty services in smaller cities, and with it comes a confusing list of options. Clients at our nail studio often ask for 'gel' when they mean extensions, or 'acrylic' when they want a natural look. Each system has its strengths, and the right choice depends on the condition of your natural nails, your lifestyle and the look you want. This guide explains the main options in plain language.
Gel Polish: Colour on Your Natural Nails
Gel polish looks like regular nail paint but is cured (hardened) under a UV or LED lamp. It dries instantly, has a glossy finish and lasts around two to three weeks without chipping. It does not add length; it simply colours and protects your natural nails.
Gel polish is a good choice if your nails are already a length you like and you want long-lasting, chip-free colour for a function, a holiday or everyday wear.
Acrylic Extensions: Strong and Sculpted
Acrylic nails are made by mixing a liquid monomer with a powder polymer, which forms a soft bead that the technician shapes over your nail or over a form, then lets harden in air. Acrylic is very strong and can be sculpted into dramatic lengths and shapes like coffin, stiletto and almond.
Acrylics need an infill every two to four weeks as your natural nail grows out. They suit people who want length and strength, or who have weak, short nails that do not grow well. The downside is that acrylic is rigid, so a hard knock can crack it or lift it from the natural nail.
Gel Extensions and Soft Gel Tips
Gel extensions use builder gel instead of acrylic, either sculpted on a form or applied as pre-shaped soft gel tips (sometimes called Gel-X-style tips) that are bonded to the nail and cured under a lamp. They feel lighter and slightly more flexible than acrylic and have no strong smell during application.
Soft gel tips are quick to apply and give very even, natural-looking shapes. They typically last three to four weeks. They are a popular choice for brides and for anyone who wants length without a heavy feel.
Quick Comparison
- Gel polish: no added length, lasts 2 to 3 weeks, soak-off removal, gentlest on natural nails when removed properly.
- Acrylic extensions: adds length, very strong, lasts 2 to 4 weeks before infill, rigid feel.
- Gel extensions or soft gel tips: adds length, lighter and more flexible, lasts 3 to 4 weeks, natural look.
Are Extensions Bad for Your Nails?
Extensions themselves do not ruin nails. The damage almost always comes from heavy filing of the natural nail during preparation, or from incorrect removal. Peeling, biting or pulling off gel or acrylic takes layers of your natural nail with it, leaving it thin, sore and weak.
Always have extensions and gel polish removed professionally, by soaking or careful filing. If your nails feel thin or sensitive, give them a break of two to four weeks between sets and use a cuticle oil daily.
A Note on Allergies
Some people develop an allergy to the acrylates used in gel and acrylic products. It usually appears as itching, redness or swelling around the nails or on the fingertips, and sometimes elsewhere on the face or neck. It is more likely when uncured product touches the skin. A careful technician keeps product off your skin and cures each layer fully. If you notice a reaction, stop and see a dermatologist, because the allergy is permanent and can affect future dental and medical treatments that use similar materials.
UV Lamps and Your Skin
Gel products are cured under UV or LED lamps. The exposure from each manicure is short, but if you have frequent gel manicures, you can apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen on your hands 20 minutes before your appointment or wear fingerless UV-protective gloves.
Hygiene Matters
- Tools like clippers, pushers and metal files should be cleaned and sterilised between clients, or be single-use.
- Files and buffers that cannot be sterilised should be new for each client.
- Your technician should not cut or aggressively push back living skin around the nail.
- Never have extensions applied over a nail that is infected, lifting or painful.
Making Your Manicure Last
- Wear gloves when washing dishes, cleaning or using strong detergents.
- Use your fingertips, not your nails, to open cans, peel stickers or scrape things.
- Apply cuticle oil every day to keep the surrounding skin and natural nail flexible.
- Book infills on time. Waiting too long makes the nail top-heavy and more likely to lift or break.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long do nail extensions last?
Acrylic extensions usually need an infill every two to four weeks. Soft gel tips and gel extensions last about three to four weeks. Gel polish on natural nails lasts two to three weeks.
Can I remove gel polish at home?
It is safer to have it removed at a salon. If you must do it at home, gently file the top coat, soak cotton in acetone, wrap each nail in foil for 10 to 15 minutes and push the softened gel off gently. Never peel it.
Which is better for a wedding: acrylic or gel?
Both work well. Soft gel tips give a lighter, more natural feel, while acrylic gives maximum strength for long, detailed designs. Discuss your outfit and the length you want with your technician.
